Bluemetrix or Protegrity for Vaultless Tokenization? Here’s a breakdown of each platform’s strengths.
Vaultless Tokenization Comparison
We often hear from our customers and industry peers that Bluemetrix and Protegrity are top contenders when they’re evaluating data tokenization tools.
With the rising demand for data protection, we've received an influx of questions on how these two solutions stack up. Below, we highlight the core features of both platforms, highlight key differences in our approaches to tokenization, as well as pricing differences.
Understanding the solutions
Protegrity is a data protection platform.
Bluemetrix SecureToken is a vaultless tokenization solution designed specifically for users within the Cloudera ecosystem. With experience from over 500 Professional Services deployments for Hortonworks and Cloudera, Bluemetrix leverages this expertise to drive innovation in SecureToken so that development and security teams can tokenize and detokenize data on demand while maintaining governance and visibility. Bluemetrix has been a technological partner of Cloudera and Hortonwork since 2001.
Shared Features: What Both Bluemetrix and Protegrity Offer
Both Bluemetrix SecureToken and Protegrity Vaultless Tokenization deliver a suite of features aimed at protecting and managing sensitive data:
Data Masking: Obscures sensitive data to protect against unauthorized access.
Format-Preserving Encryption (FPE): Encrypts data while preserving its original format and structure.
Role-Based Access Control (RBAC): Control data access based on user roles.
Data Redaction: Selectively remove sensitive or PII details as needed.
Encrypted Operations: Process data securely while encrypted.
Bring Your Own Key (BYOK): Supports internal key management with BYOK integration.
Policy Management: Centralises data protection policies for consistent security.
De-identification for LLMs: Anonymizes data for AI model training.
User Access Management: Manage user authentication and access rights.
Flexible Deployment Options: Both solutions offer on-premises and private cloud options.
Key Differences between Bluemetrix and Protegrity
CDP Native Integration: Bluemetrix SecureToken is purpose-built for Cloudera Data Platform (CDP). Unlike traditional solutions that require moving sensitive data to the external platform or deploying complex agents, SecureToken performs tokenization directly within the CDP ecosystem utilizing its Spark processing environment via the installation of a simple UDF along with some configuration changes for Ranger/KMS, protecting sensitive data at source without necessitating the movement of the data.
Protegrity, in contrast, is a standalone platform requiring the deployment of an Agent on each node to integrate fully with CDP.
Ease of Deployment and Integration: SecureToken has been designed for rapid deployment with simple integration into existing data pipelines. Protegrity, while feature-rich, needs more customization and integration steps in Cloudera, which could extend the initial deployment time.
Scalability Powered by Spark: Built on Apache Spark, SecureToken handles large datasets efficiently, scaling smoothly as data grows thanks to Spark’s parallel processing. Protegrity also offers scalability but doesn’t leverage Spark, which may impact performance for those managing large volumes of data.
Future Extensibility: SecureToken's architecture is flexible and forward-looking, which means it can support future growth and evolving protection requirements alongside your organisation. Protegrity, also offers extensive features, though reaching similar levels of extensibility in Cloudera might need additional and longer planning.
Bluemetrix vs. Protegrity Pricing
Cost-Effectiveness: While specific pricing may vary based on deployment requirements, SecureToken can be more cost-effective by utilizing your existing CDP infrastructure, as external tools are not necessary anymore.
Licensing: Protegrity's 12-month enterprise license under their Premium Package is structured as an all-in annual fee, prepared for larger deployments. Bluemetrix SecureToken, however, follows a flexible, node-based model without extra charges for CPU usage or storage. It scales with actual usage and is more adaptable to specific organizational requirements.
60-Day Free Trial: Bluemetrix SecureToken offers a 60-day free trial, providing ample time for teams to explore the platform's full suite of features and determine its suitability before committing. Protegrity's shorter trial options offer less time for a thorough evaluation.
Regardless of which option you believe is best for your business, we suggest trying any solution before you buy. See Bluemetrix in action with a free 60-day trial.
